Previously, we outlined how Millennials and Gen Z redefined the modern work environment, with their purpose-driven ambition and passion for a healthy work-life balance starting to reshape the landscape of the workplace.

With the young generations making their mark on the employee demographic, it is important now more than ever for corporations to rethink corporate culture in order to cultivate a Millennial and Gen Z- friendly workplace.

At StaffMatters, we understand how important it is for companies to pay attention to the wants and needs of employees, to ensure that productivity and workplace enthusiasm never falters. In this blog, we identify key strategies companies can implement to understand the unique values, expectations and preferences of these generations.

1. Offer Flexibility and Work-Life Balance
The Covid-19 pandemic brought about a shift in the workplace landscape. Remote working became the norm and has become the norm in many corporations since then. At the same time, our previous blog outlined how Gen Z and Millennials have different work-life expectations and value their personal time outside of the office more so than previous generations.
A Forbes study recently outlined that 71% of remote workers in the United States found working from home more helpful in balancing their work and personal life which inherently makes a positive impact on employee well-being. As a result, improved employee well-being contributes to better productivity in the workplace.
By providing employees with the option to work remotely, helps attract top talent in the Millennial and Gen Z spheres.

2. Create a Purpose-Driven Culture
We previously noted that a Deloitte study identified that “nearly all Gen Zs and Millennials want purpose-driven work, and they are not afraid to turn down work that doesn’t align with their values”. As a result, to attract top talent within the Gen Z and Millennial workforce, companies could promote and engage in corporate social responsibility initiatives that are in alignment with the company’s values.
In the same vein, it is fundamental for corporations to emphasize a strong company mission that aligns with employees’ personal values. This includes a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

3. Emphasize Professional Growth and Development
Millennials and Gen Z are consistently looking for opportunities to grow and develop professionally. Companies should provide their employees with continuous learning opportunities, whether it be offering ongoing training, workshops and/or access to educational resources. These generations value skill development and career progression.
At the same time, corporations could implement mentorship or coaching programs that help younger employees navigate their careers and develop leadership skills. This outlines a company’s willingness to see their employees grow and flourish within the organization.

4. Utilize Technology and Innovation
It is no secret that the two younger generations were born in the thick of technological breakthroughs so it is only pertinent to utilize technology and innovation. Companies should use up-to-date technology to streamline work processes and communication as Millennials and Gen Z expect seamless digital experiences.
It is also vital for corporations to create an environment where employees are encouraged to share new ideas and innovate, allowing them to contribute to the company’s growth.

5. Promote a Positive and Inclusive Work Environment
Piggybacking off of the notions that Millennials and Gen Z thrive in a company that holds similar values to the individual, it is important for corporations to promote a positive and inclusive work environment that aligns with these generations’ values. Corporations can do so by fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace where all voices are heard and respected and at the same time provide employees with mental health support. This goes hand in hand with point 1 of this blog in which Gen Z and Millennials place heightened importance on a healthy work-life balance. The provision of mental health support and resources, such as counseling services or wellness programs, helps address the increasing focus on mental well-being.

By implementing these strategies, companies can create a workplace environment that resonates with Millennials and Gen Z, leading to increased engagement, retention and overall job satisfaction.
